Marine

Marine cargo

Marine cargo insurance covers goods in transit — by sea, air, rail or road, domestic or international — under the Institute Cargo Clauses A, B or C. For a trading or manufacturing client the object is not a policy but an open cover: an agreement with a limit per conveyance and per location, a clause set per commodity, and a stream of declarations and certificates.

What you get

The open cover modelled as what it is — limits, lanes, clause sets and declarations — instead of forced into a property form.

What the RFQ captures

  • Turnover by lane and mode; commodity groups and their packing
  • Limit per conveyance and per location; clause set wanted per commodity (A, B or C)
  • Policy type: open cover, open policy, annual or sales-turnover
  • War and strikes cover, duty and increased-value cover
  • Claims history and the incumbent's terms

What changes for the broker

Any client with stock under fire almost certainly moves that stock, which makes marine the highest-frequency cross-sell in a commercial book. Bridge structures the ask around the open cover — two limits, a declaration mechanism, a certificate stream — and the domestic flows under an open policy or sales-turnover policy. Declarations and certificates then run through Connect, so the client’s shipping team self-serves.

Cargo has been detariffed since 1994; there is no band to carry. The annual-policy minimums, duty and increased-value links and valuation basis are market conventions Bridge honours in the product configuration.

Questions

Which policy type does a client need?

A specific policy for a one-off shipment; an open cover for ongoing imports and exports with declarations; an open policy or sales-turnover policy for domestic movements. Bridge asks the turnover and lane questions that decide it.

Does Bridge benchmark marine rates?

Not yet. Constructs are documented and structured; current rate levels by commodity and lane need a live open cover from an Indian broker as the source.
